At the moment an employee is told their services are no longer required, their mind generally turns to the questions of ‘why?’, ‘why me?’, ‘how is this going to affect my family?, our finances?’  Not to mention, ‘what am I going to do next?’.

Jumping into a job search immediately after leaving a job isn’t necessarily the first best thing one can do.  Many need time to process their emotions and come to understand the reasons behind their emotions first – before they enable a practical plan to find a new role. Which, for most people, is a lonely and frustrating concept when they think of what it actually takes to navigate today’s fast moving job market by themself.

Take Sherry for example..

When Sherry was enrolled in our program after a relatively short tenure with the insurance group she worked for, it was immediately apparent that she not only needed practical help with her job search, but she also needed help to change her mind-set about the circumstances, as well as support to manage her finances, which were already causing her great personal stress.

As is often the case, Sherry was very angry at her employment termination meeting. But her anger did not subside easily in the days that followed after leaving the company.  It wasn’t until she had a couple of intense and vulnerable sessions with her personal program coach at CMS, that she could see that her angry emotions were a direct response to the fear and uncertainty she felt now that her employment had ended.

Through their conversations, her program coach was able to help her separate her angry emotions from the natural fear response she had to her termination. Understanding why she was feeling the way she was, made it much easier to process her emotions.

In addition, Sherry’s program coach, encouraged her to seek the guidance of CMS's independent CFP professional in order to get practical help in the management of her personal financial situation.  Once she worked with our CFP, Sherry had a personalized plan to proactively take control of her expenses which was paramount to reducing her feelings of fear, uncertainty and anger.

By addressing her emotions and helping her to understand where they came from, and by giving her practical assistance to manage a key source of stress (i.e. her finances), Sherry felt ready, and much more confident, to then focus on the future, and take the next best steps to advance her career – via the strategic CMS career transition assistance and outplacement program.

The overall goal at CMS is to provide meaningful, practical and personalized assistance to our job seekers, helping them to keep their time between jobs to the minimum.  By including three pillars of support in the form of, Personalized Coaching, Practical Job Search assistance and, Financial Counselling, we ensure a truly holistic approach to successful career transition!
